Baby Bonnet and Booties

Here are the baby bonnet and booties that my great niece wore for baby dedication on Mother's Day at our church. My mother made the bonnet and I made the booties. The patterns are old workbasket patterns from February and March of 1969. We used size 20 DMC Cordonnet Special thread and Lizbeth Baby Pink. I was very concerned that by using size 20 thread, that I was making booties for a toddler. However, the booties fit perfectly. My great niece was born in December and weighed a little over 10 lbs. She looked like a baby doll. My mother also made her an heirloom dress that was absolutely gorgeous.

I would like to thank Bonnie (swankmb) who helped me find the patterns for these and offered wonderful advice. You were a lot of help.

Happy tatting,

Ha! I have that pattern! My mother loved it, although she's not a tatter, and she kept the pattern and laminated it. 1969 is the year I graduated from high school, and she knew I was interested in tatting, even though I wasn't able to learn how to do it until 20 years later. So, now the pattern is in my possession, but I've never been brave enough to try it. What a gorgeous set! You and your mother are very talented!

It is lucky your wonderful tatting gifts fit the little cherub! I'll bet she looks adorable in them as she is so well-developed already! Ten pounds! Wow!

Congrats.

Babies seem to arrive much larger than they used to. You can put a small foot in a larger bootie, but it doesn't work well the other way round. LOL

You and your mother have created a set to be passed along for generations. Beautiful!

When I tat booties I use size 8 pearl cotton and so far the size has turned out perfect for new babies.

I've never tried tatting a bonnet though. Someday....

Your set is stunning.

How beautiful! You did a wonderful job on both! I tatted a pair of booties and didn't notice until I was taking a picture that one was SMALLER then the other. oohhh no. But as it turned out that the 'mistake' has created a a chance to make a pair for a premature baby...
